Literature Text

After several days of training, it's time for my session with the game makers. I`m not sure what I'll do, but I hope I can manage five. I sit in a chair, waiting, waiting, waiting. It's clearing out slowly, like maple syrup from a tree. Finally, it`s my turn.
Instantly, my hopes of getting a five are dashed. The Gamemakers are bored, and very drunk. The last thing they want to do is watch a little girl shoot things with a slingshot. It makes me see red, thinking of this. I try to calm myself by thinking of Lily, and how I taught her to swing through the trees, back home..That`s it! There are several wooden things that are set up in such a way that I caneasily swing all around the room. I climb onto the first pole, and begain swinging around, gripping the bars easily. It`s harder back home, see, because if you place your hand on too light a branch, you`re dead. I find that I`m actually smiling and a quick glace over my shoulder tells me that they`re all watching me.
Finally, I jump down, and smile at them, trying not to look too smug. They all nod at me.
"You may go now." One says, and he gives me a small, suppressed smile, and I walk off.
My feet don't seem to touch the ground as I walk to the Dining Hall. I see Thresh and Seeder waiting for me.
"How did it go?" Seeder asks carefully.
"Great! I say happily, smiling. "I think I might get a six." I quickly tell them what I did for the session. Seeder is beaming at me, and even Thresh is smiling. Now we're turning on the TV for the scores.
The Careers get  an 8-10 range, and soon, they're showing our scores. Thresh gets a 8. We're all clapping him on the back, and laughing.
Soon, they're flashing my number. A seven! I stare at the screen happily. I'd been hoping for a five or a six, but a seven is almost in the career range. But now, they're showing District 12's scores.
The blonde boy gets an 8. Suprising, he didn't look like much. But Katniss gets an 11.
My eyes widen, and we're all silent for a while.
"She's something special, isn't she?" Thresh says, quietly.
"I think so." I say. It's as if I've just remembered that this isn't a happy, fun game. It's a deadly one.
"I'm going to bed." I say, and I begain to walk off to my room. Halfway down the hallway, though, I hear my name coming from the dining hall.
"...It's so unfair, though!" Thresh whispers malicously.
"Do you think I want her to die, Thresh? Do you think I want anything like this to be happening?" Seeder asks, and she sounds old. Very old. I realize that they're talking about me.
"But telling her that she has a chance is wrong! What chance does she have, Seeder, against Cato? You've just raised her hopes up, and then she'll die!" He spits oput, and I can tell just by his voice that he's shaking with rage.
"Thresh, don't worry about it. The more you care about her, the less of the chance you have of surviving. Just go to bed. I can't take this." Seeder says, and I can tell from her voice that she's holding back tears.
I run off silently down the hall, tears streaming down my face.

Death. It's coming for me, as sure as spring. Today's the day I'll get up, get dressed up, and act like a trained dog for the people who will be responsible for my death.  All the while I'm getting ready with my prep team, it's all I can do to stop shaking with rage. They sit by, as so many innocent people die! No, they don't sit by, they enjoy it. Whenever the prep team asks me a question, I struggle to keep from snapping at them. I sit there, thinking about all the atrocities they have commited in the past seventy four years or so.  The Capitol, I mean. Finally, my gown's here. My stylist orders me to close my eyes. I shudder as it passes over my naked body.
When they open them, my eyes go wide. for once in my life, I'm beautiful.
I don't know the girl that's standing before me. She has shiny, waist length hair that you can see your reflection in, it's so bright and shiny. Her gown is a light purple, which happens to be my favourite color. Any movement I make makes the gown ripple and shine bits of light into your face.
I'm struggling to speak. I'm opening and closing my mouth like a fish.
"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." I said, staring at myself in shock.
"You look adorable!" The prep team say, and they kiss me on the cheek. I try not to gag.
It's time for the interveiws. I'll be in front of the whole of Panem. I'm being offered drinks, and foods, but I can't eat anything, but it'll end up all over the stage.
As we`re being lead onto the stage, I try to calm myself by thinking about Lily, Potana and my family. It helps some.
The crowd's starting to get bored, just like the gamemakers. This isn't helping me chances at all. I'm so nervous, I'm sweating everywhere.
Finally, it's my turn. I walk silently across the stage, and sit down in the chair beside the person the will question me for three minutes.
"So, Rue. What's amazed you most since you've arrived?" He ask gently, obviously trying not to scare me.
The brutality, cruelty and sickening love of violence of all of you, I think. But somehow, I don't think that will help my chances any. I try to awnser honestly. Seeder told me to be humble.
"Well, it's beautiful here. And everything is so advanced! And the food is so good! I'd get fat instantly if I lived here!" I say, and they're all laughing.
"Well, congratulations on your score! Quite impressive, for someone so small!"
I smile, and nod. "Thank you." I say quietly.
"So, Rue, what is your strategy in the Games?" He asks. and I think of something I thought of while waiting for my turn.
"I'm very hard to catch. And if they can't catch me, they can't kill me. So don't count me out." I say, almost inaudibly.
"I wouldn't dream of it." He says encouragingly.
The buzzer goes off. "Sorry, but we're out of time. Best of luck, Rue, tribute from District 11.
It's  Distrct twelve's turn. Everyone gasp at Katniss's dress, which at the slightest movement makes her appear to be engulfed in tongues of flame. It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen.
They exchange small talk, congratulating her on her score. Finally, they talk about her sister.
"Her name's Prim." She begain tenatively "And I love her more than anything." You can hear a pin drop now.
"What did she say, when she said goodbye?" He prompts gently.
"She asked me really hard to win." She says.
"And what did you say?"
He face hardens with determintaion, and her eyes narrow. Her voice is filled with determination, and it's menacing. "I swore I would."
"I bet you did. Best of luck, Katniss Everdeen, tribute from District 12."
The blonde boy comes on next, and he and Caeser get along well, and suddenly, he's saying that he's in love with Katniss Everdeen!
Katniss looks down and blushes, and I know it's true. The crowd goes wild, screaming and gasping, it's hurting my ears.
Finally, when everything is clamed down, we get into cars and drive to the training centre.
I go off to bed, knowing full well if I sleep, I'll have nightmares for sure, and that's not going to help me any in the arena.
I wash all the makeup off of my face, and snuggle into bed, dreading tommorow. The Hunger Games start tommorow. And the odds aren't in my favour.
Drama to ze max, I know. Poor Rue. It's hard writing this, when you know she's going to die.
